| "Hot Playing: Program lights up
Coliseum" By Ken Keuffel JOURNAL REPORTER Published: May 23, 2008 If Arturo Sandoval isn't the best musician out there, he is certainly the most versatile. The "new fans" were those whose primary motivation was hearing Three Dog Night, the famed rock group from the 1970s, who appeared with the symphony after intermission... (Full article here) |

A note from The Arts Council Public Art & Design Committee: Business 40 has been the workhorse thoroughfare of commuters and visitors to Winston-Salem since being built as our "downtown expressway" in the 1950s. The planned rebuilding of seven bridges at the heart of this roadway gives us a unique opportunity to design not just a functioning roadway but also a new series of vistas and impressions about our place and its sense of self. Community meetings about the rebuilding will be held starting in 2008, as neighbors along the route share their hopes and concerns for the project. We hope that neighbors and other community members will ask transportation and political decision-makers that the project be designed both for engineering traffic needs and for its artistic impression-making potentials. Dionne Warwick gave her fans their money’s worth last night, teaming up with the Piedmont Wind Symphony at Joel Coliseum. Much of the concert, not surprisingly, involved what Warwick called a “stroll down memory lane,” with Warwick reprising the many classics that have sustained her fame for more than 45 years. These included “Alfie,” “Walk On By” and “What the World Needs Now.” Her rhythm section, led by a very talented, Latin-friendly pianist named Kathleen Rubbicco, kept the right groove throughout, and Robert Simon brought out the symphony’s swinging best. ... It was hard not to fall for their playing - a major reason why the wind symphony remains such a stellar ensemble. (Read the full article HERE!) |
