"Hot Playing: Program lights up Coliseum"
By Ken Keuffel JOURNAL REPORTER
Published: May 23, 2008

If Arturo Sandoval isn't the best musician out there, he is certainly the most versatile.

Last night, Sandoval -- a frighteningly talented trumpeter, pianist and percussionist -- offered both old and new fans an unforgettable program of Latin jazz and much more, teaming up with the Piedmont Wind Symphony at Joel Coliseum. The "new fans" were those whose primary motivation was hearing Three Dog Night, the famed rock group from the 1970s, who appeared with the symphony after intermission... (Full article here)

Peter F. Chapman Concerto Competition - March 13th at 7:30 p.m. at Brendle Recital Hall.
Tickets $12 adults, $10 seniors, $5 students.

Alto saxophonist Scott Cory is currently a junior at Central Davidson High School in Lexington, North Carolina

where he is the principal saxophonist in the school’s Wind Ensemble under the direction of band director James Daugherty.  Following six years of study on saxophone, Mr. Cory has held positions as the principal alto saxophonist in the Davidson County All-County Band and has additionally placed very highly in seating for the Northwest North Carolina All-District Band. Last year Mr. Cory was eligible to audition for the North Carolina All-State Band.

Concerto Winner, Scott Cory!

During the summer of 2007 Mr. Cory completed summer studies at Cannon Music Camp at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina where he performed as principal alto saxophonist for the Symphonic Band and in the Jazz Ensemble II. At Cannon, Mr. Cory also performed lead alto and soprano in one of two Honors Saxophone Quartets.

Currently, Mr. Cory is a private student of Dr. David Kirby at Pfeiffer University.  Additionally, he has studied with Dr. Scott Kallestad of Appalachian State University and Dr. Artie Almeida, a free-lance professional saxophonist from Orlando, FL.

In addition to his love and passion for music, Scott plays for the Central Davidson golf team and is currently ranked number one in his graduating class.  Mr. Cory’s plans for college include majoring in Chemistry, Saxophone Performance or possibly double majoring in both. Ideally he would like to one day play soprano or alto saxophone in a professional saxophone quartet that focuses on classical repertoire.

A note from The Arts Council Public Art & Design Committee:

Business 40 has been the workhorse thoroughfare of commuters and visitors to Winston-Salem since being built as our "downtown expressway" in the 1950s. The planned rebuilding of seven bridges at the heart of this roadway gives us a unique opportunity to design not just a functioning roadway but also a new series of vistas and impressions about our place and its sense of self. Community meetings about the rebuilding will be held starting in 2008, as neighbors along the route share their hopes and concerns for the project.  We hope that neighbors and other community members will ask transportation and political decision-makers that the project be designed both for engineering traffic needs and for its artistic impression-making potentials. Dionne Warwick gave her fans their money’s worth last night, teaming up with the Piedmont Wind Symphony at Joel Coliseum.

Much of the concert, not surprisingly, involved what Warwick called a “stroll down memory lane,” with Warwick reprising the many classics that have sustained her fame for more than 45 years. These included “Alfie,” “Walk On By” and “What the World Needs Now.” Her rhythm section, led by a very talented, Latin-friendly pianist named Kathleen Rubbicco, kept the right groove throughout, and Robert Simon brought out the symphony’s swinging best. ... It was hard not to fall for their playing - a major reason why the wind symphony remains such a stellar ensemble. (Read the full article HERE!)
