The 2007-2008
Competition is open to high school
music students, grades 10-12, who live in Davidson, Davie,
Forsyth, Guilford, Stokes, Surry, and Yadkin counties.
Students must complete an Application
Form and submit a Letter
Of Recommendation from a teacher.
(Grade point average in school will be considered.)
The categories of the competition for
2007-08 will be
brass, woodwind and melodic percussion.

Principal players in the Piedmont Wind
Symphony will review the applications and select those who are eligible to
audition.
Those selected for auditions must prepare a
pre-selected, required piece for their particular instruments from those
listed under Required
Musical Selections. Students will audition without any
accompaniment.
The auditions will include
playing scales from the All-State Band list of scales and performing a
section from the required piece they have prepared. The judges will
provide critiques of the participants’ playing to help them with their
future studies.
The panel of judges will
consist of professional musicians from the community.
The winner of the competition will be
invited to solo with the
Piedmont Wind Symphony on the Concerto Concert to be held in the Spring of
2008. The student must be
available for rehearsals with the symphony every Monday for four weeks
prior to the concert date.
First prize is
$1,000 in cash,
an invitation to perform with PWS
and a certificate; 2nd
prize is $300 and a certificate; 3rd prize is $100 and a
certificate. Honorable mentions, if any, will receive certificates.
