A
note from The Arts Council Public Art & Design Committee:
Business 40 has been the workhorse
thoroughfare of commuters and visitors to Winston-Salem since being
built as our "downtown expressway" in the 1950s. The planned
rebuilding of seven bridges at the heart of this roadway gives us a
unique opportunity to design not just a functioning roadway but also
a new series of vistas and impressions about our place and its sense
of self. Community meetings about the rebuilding will be held
starting in 2008, as neighbors along the route share their hopes and
concerns for the project. We hope that neighbors and other
community members will ask transportation and political
decision-makers that the project be designed both for
engineering traffic needs and for its artistic impression-making
potentials.

Dionne Warwick gave her fans their money’s worth
last night, teaming up with the Piedmont Wind Symphony at Joel Coliseum.
Much of the
concert, not surprisingly, involved what Warwick called a “stroll down
memory lane,” with Warwick reprising the many classics that have sustained
her fame for more than 45 years. These included “Alfie,” “Walk On By” and
“What the World Needs Now.” Her rhythm section, led by a very talented,
Latin-friendly pianist named Kathleen Rubbicco, kept the right groove
throughout, and Robert Simon brought out the symphony’s swinging best. ...
It was hard not to fall for
their playing - a major reason why the wind symphony remains such a stellar
ensemble. (Read

On April 10, 1990 the Piedmont
Wind Symphony (PWS) gave its first performance as the Piedmont Symphonic
Wind Ensemble. Robert Simon, conductor and music director, formed the
group with the intention of giving outstanding performances that challenge
the standard band repertory. The Piedmont Wind Symphony now performs music
of all types and styles, from Renaissance to Contemporary including Baroque,
Classical, Romantic, Pops and Jazz. ... (Read

The musicians of the Piedmont Wind Symphony share one
passion: making excellent music from a variety of genres. According to
Robert simon, artistic director, “We do tremendous symphonic works. We do
orchestral transcriptions and a lot of original works. We custom arrange
works that we perform with our guest artists. We’re like a symphony
orchestra minus the string sections.”

Welcome!
We love making music and pursue excellence in our performances of works for the
wind symphony. Our repertory, as illustrated on our CDs, includes all types and
styles of music, from the ridiculous (works by 'P.D.Q. Bach') to the sublime (Passacaglia
and Fugue in C Minor by J.S. Bach) to hits from Broadway, and jazz
selections. Enjoy your visit and come back often!
